Australia: Recall of GNY slimming pills - labelled as MSV (Strong Version), ESV (Extra Strong Version) and GRL (Rapid Loss Soft Gel Capsules) as they contain undeclared drug ingredient sibutramine

The TGA advises that GNY Australia has initiated a recall of GNY Slimming Pills - labelled as MSV (Strong Version), ESV (Extra Strong Version) and GRL (Rapid Loss Soft Gel Capsules) - as they pose a serious health risk. Testing by the TGA has found that these products contain sibutramine, a prescription-only ingredient that has not been declared on the product labels. Sibutramine was the active ingredient in Reductil, which was withdrawn from the Australian market in October 2010 because a major study revealed that it caused an increased risk of cardiovascular events. GNY Slimming Pills should not be taken as they may be harmful and can cause symptoms including headaches, dizziness and dry mouth. GNY Slimming Pills, labelled as MSV, ESV and GRL, have been illegally supplied in Australia, as they are not listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and, as such, have not been assessed by the TGA for quality, safety or efficacy, as required under Australian law. Also, the place of manufacture is not approved by the TGA.

In Hong Kong, the above products are not registered pharmaceutical products. Related news has been released by TGA and was posted on the Drug Office website on 1 March 2013.
