| The United States: Black Thai Honey may be harmful due to hidden drug ingredient |
| |
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to purchase or use Black Thai Honey, a product promoted and sold for male sexual enhancement on various websites, including www.honeypacks.com, and possibly in some retail stores.
FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that Black Thai Honey contains sildenafil, tadalafil and diclofenac not listed on the product label.
Sildenafil and tadalafil are the active ingredients in the FDA-approved prescription drugs Viagra and Cialis, respectively, used to treat erectile dysfunction. FDA approval of Viagra and Cialis is restricted to use under the supervision of a licensed health care professional. These undeclared ingredients may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, such as nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease often take nitrates.
Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs may cause increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, as well as serious gastrointestinal damage, including bleeding, ulceration and fatal perforation of the stomach and intestines. This hidden drug ingredient may also interact with other medications and significantly increase the risk of adverse events, particularly when consumers use multiple NSAID-containing products.
