United Kingdom: MHRA warns of heart and liver problems associated with popular sport supplement OxyElite Pro
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a public warning today about serious liver and heart problems associated with two versions of popular sport supplement OxyElite Pro.

The original formulation of OxyElite Pro contains DMAA which is associated with a number of side effects ranging from shortness of breath to heart attacks. The MHRA took action to remove products containing DMAA in August 2012 as part of a project that identified sport supplements that contain potentially dangerous steroid or stimulant ingredients.

The MHRA is also referring people to warnings from the Food Standards Agency about a newer formulation of OxyElite Pro containing Aegeline, a substance that has recently been linked to 56 cases of acute hepatitis in the USA, a condition that can attack the liver cells, cause liver failure and has resulted in one death internationally.

Please refer to the following website in MHRA for details:

In Hong Kong, the above product is not a registered pharmaceutical product. Related news has been released by FDA and HSA which was posted on the website of Drug Office on 9 October 2013, 15 October 2013 and 19 October 2013. A press release was issued to appeal the public not to buy or use oral product labeled as OxyELITE Pro on 9 October 2013. The Registration Committee of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board discussed the control of DMAA in the meeting in December 2012 and decided to regulate DMAA as pharmaceutical product with effect from 1 April 2013. Related news has been released and posted on the website of Drug Office on 7 December 2012.
