Singapore: HSA Alert: “Curalin Advanced Glucose Support” recalled due to detection of prescription-only medicines for diabetes

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) is alerting members of the public not to consume “CuraLin advanced glucose support” which was labelled to contain traditional herbs and tested by HSA to contain two undisclosed prescription-only antidiabetic medicines, glibenclamide and metformin.

LYC Nutrihealth (Singapore) Pte Ltd had imported two batches of the product. As part of HSA’s routine checks, HSA tested the product and found that both batches contain glibenclamide and metformin. HSA immediately directed LYC Nutrihealth (Singapore) Pte Ltd to stop all sales and recall both batches of “CuraLin advanced glucose support” that were imported from the United States of America and supplied locally (batch number: 2023-19650, 2023-19651). The recall is ongoing.

The product was marketed to “help support healthy blood glucose levels”, “promote energy levels”, and “help support carbohydrate & fat metabolism”. It was sold by various sellers and on local e-commerce platforms including Shopee and Lazada. HSA has worked with the local e-commerce platform administrators to ensure that listings of the affected product were removed.

The inappropriate use of glibenclamide or metformin without medical supervision may cause low blood glucose levels which can lead to seizures and coma. Other adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and cholestatic jaundice (a condition where bile flow is blocked or slowed down). Metformin can also cause lactic acidosis (dangerous build-up of acid in blood) that can be life-threatening. Diabetic patients who take “CuraLin advanced glucose support” together with their prescribed antidiabetic medicines are also at risk of overdose due to the addictive effects of these medicines.
