Products found to contain undeclared medicines

The captioned 13 products promoted for weight loss were found to contian the following undeclared drug substances:
- Phen Tabz: contains undeclared 1,3-dimethylamylamine (DMAA);
- Asset Extreme, Asset Extreme Plus, Meizitang Citrus, Slimming Diet Berry Plus, Citrus Fit Gold, Hot Detox and Thinogenics: contain undeclared sibutramine;
- Tonic Life BP and Slimfast Capsules: contain undeclared phenolphthalein; and
- Dr. Ming’s Chinese Capsule, Magic Slim and Apple’s Quick Impact Weight Loss: contain undeclared sibutramine and phenolphthalein
Side effects associated with DMAA include high blood pressure, shortness of breath, chest pain, stroke and psychiatric disorders. Sibutramine was previously used to treat obesity but is no longer authorized for sale in Canada because of its association with an increased risk of cardiovascular side effects such as heart attack and stroke. Phenolphthalein was previously used as a laxative but is no longer authorized for sale in Canada because it may cause cancer.
These products are not authorized for sale in Canada and have not been found in the Canadian marketplace, but it is possible they may have been brought into the country by travellers or purchased over the Internet. Canadians who have these products are advised not to use them, and should consult with a healthcare professional if they have concerns about their health related to the use of these products.
