The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has tested a product labelled Lose weight capsules and found that the capsules contain the undeclared substances sibutramine and diclofenac.
Consumers are advised that sibutramine is a prescription-only medicine (which was the active ingredient in Reductil). It was withdrawn in October 2010 after a study showed an increased risk of major cardiac events. Consumers are also advised that diclofenac as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is currently available in Australia as an over the counter medication or prescription-only medicine dependant on the preparation size. Weight capsules pose a serious risk to health and should not be taken. TGA investigations have shown that a number of people in Australia may have bought the product online.
Consumers are advised to stop taking the product and consult their health care practitioner if they have any concerns arising from the use of the product.
