Australia: Safety advisory: Ballerina Anti-Obesity capsules contain the undeclared substances phenolphthalein and sibutramine (English only)

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) announces that it has tested a product labelled Ballerina Anti-Obesity capsules and found that the capsules contain the undeclared substances phenolphthalein and sibutramine.

Phenolphthalein is a prescription-only substance previously marketed as an oral laxative, withdrawn from sale from many markets in the late 1990's due to concerns over its carcinogenicity with long term use. Consumers are advised that sibutramine is a prescription-only medicine (which was the active ingredient in Reductil). It was withdrawn in Oct 2010 after a study showed an increased risk of major cardiac events.

Consumers are advised to stop taking the product and take any remaining capsules to their local pharmacy for safe disposal. If they have any concerns arising from their use of this product, consult their health care practitioner.

Please refer to the following website in TGA for details: http://www.tga.gov.au/alert/ballerina-anti-obesity-capsules

In Hong Kong, the above product is not a registered pharmaceutical product.
